Walmart Neighborhood Market to open in Fort Mill

Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market opens in Fort Mill on Wednesday.

Fort Mill has another place to shop for food, and a good bit more than some might expect.

Wal-Mart Neighborhood Market holds its grand opening Wednesday. The 41,000-square-foot store at 500 N. Dobys Bridge Road could have up to 100 employees. The store is grocery-focused compared to a typical Wal-Mart location, but has household and other non-food items, too.

“We have a small selection of everything,” said Samantha Cochran, store manager. “You can get the basics of pretty much anything you need here.”

The grocery section fits what most customers would expect from the supercenter Wal-Mart format. Because the nearest Neighborhood Market is in Rock Hill, many in the area may not be familiar with one. Cochran said she’s heard confusion, including that grocery prices at the Fort Mill store will be higher than a supercenter.

“The prices are exactly the same,” Cochran said.

The Fort Mill store will be open 24 hours. It also includes a drive-through pharmacy open 9 a.m.-9 p.m. weekdays, until 7 p.m. Saturdays and 10 a.m.-6 p.m. Sundays.

“It’s a key piece to making the Market (concept) successful,” Cochran said.

Pharmacist Tom Redmond said everything from drive-through service to off-site immunizations will help bring in customers. In-store immunizations will be offered, too.

“The biggest thing is our immunizations right now,” he said. “You can come in and get them right here.”

Another offering is pick-up service. Customers can purchase anything on walmart.com and have it sent to the Fort Mill store with no shipping charge.

“You can send anything to this store and pick it up,” Cochran said.

Saturday events will be planned in the weeks following the opening. A small retail building also remains under construction, where several businesses, including a restaurant, could follow Wal-Mart from across the parking lot. The new development there replaces a shopping center with a vacant anchor space for about a decade.

Cochran said with nearest Wal-Mart locations in Tega Cay and Indian Land, she looks forward to serving Fort Mill residents who were without a grocer in that space for so long.

“I think it’ll be a convenient middle point for a lot of people,” she said.

Fort Mill Square targets spring opening

As published in the Fort Mill Times:

Fort Mill Square should have its first new opening this spring, with several more to follow by summer.

Walmart Neighborhood Market will open first.

“The store will be opening in the spring,” said spokesperson Caroline Crosthwait. “The exact date hasn’t been determined quite yet.”

Walmart opened a hiring center for the new store in November, with plans to hire most or all of the projected 95 positions by December for a January opening. Now the projected opening comes a little later.

Some hires are in place, though more remain.

“The store has hired quite a few associates and will continue to hire until a team large enough to serve the Fort Mill community is created,” Crosthwait said.

Mack Cross, project manager for the Fort Mill Square makeover by Sunbelt Ventures, estimates an April completion for Walmart. Main construction for the retail building will be done about the same time. New tenants will come in to tailor their spaces, resulting in likely summer openings.

Construction is “well underway,” Cross said, with roof and exterior work taking place. The former retail building, most recently overflow space for USA Tire & Auto Care and a hardware store, will be expanded by 1,200 square feet. It will hold up to five tenants.

Two have contracts, but haven’t been named. One is a nail salon and the other is a hair care shop.

“They’re local operators,” Cross said. “It’s not necessarily a franchise.”

Remaining spots include a 2,500-square-foot end space with an outdoor patio, ideal for a restaurant.

“We’re in discussion with a couple of restaurants,” Cross said.

When the former Food Lion shopping center came down to make room for the Walmart Neighborhood Market, the demolition cost Los Aztecas its spot. The restaurant owners have sites in Indian Land and near Tega Cay. Cross said he understands how popular the restaurant was, and expects a new restaurant to capitalize on a relative lack of dining out options in that area.

Cross also hasn’t ruled out Los Aztecas returning.

“No, it hasn’t (been ruled out),” he said. “We’ve kind of had discussions with them all along, but so far we haven’t been able to come to an agreement. It’s not been completely ruled out.”

It’s been challenging sticking to a construction schedule, Cross said, with so many weather delays of late. Cross said he understands people in the community who are ready to have the businesses open.

“We’re definitely looking forward to it as well,” he said.

Walmart Neighborhood Markets were designed in 1998 as a smaller-footprint option for communities in need of a pharmacy, affordable fresh groceries and select household merchandise. The Neighborhood Markets average 38,000 square feet and employ approximately 95 associates. Walmart currently operates more than 500 Neighborhood Markets nationwide.

Neighborhood Markets also give customers access to items online through their Site to Store service, which makes all of the merchandise of Walmart.com available for purchase and delivered for free to local stores. Customers can pre-pay for those purchases online or at the store.

Publix Opens in Pawleys

Georgetown County Adminstrator Sel Hemingway was impressed with what he saw following a Tuesday morning tour of the new Publix Super Market in Pawleys Island.

In fact, Hemingway said, he hopes the development the 45,600-square-foot store has already created won’t be the last.

“A name brand such as Publix will certainly be a catalyst for other business,” he said. “We’re already seeing indications of this with other parcels being developed in the immediate area.

“This type of development and the jobs it brings to the community, as well as the diversified offerings it brings to residents, are wonderful news.”

Nearly 125 associates will be employed at the Pawleys Island store.

Publix officially opened Wednesday, March 25, at 7 a.m., but the store gave tours the day before to media and a few local residents, including Hemingway. The store is the 1,098th Publix store to open since the company was founded in 1930 in Winter Haven, Florida.

Hemingway was pleased, too, that the new grocery store has led to the revamping of the entire Pawleys Island Plaza.

“I think that has been a great renovation project for that shopping complex,” he said.

On Tuesday, guests who arrived at the store for the preview were divided into small groups and given tours of the deli, the produce section, the meat and seafood department, the bakery, the store’s pharmacy and more.

Employees offered samples of food — everything from key lime pie and strawberry shortcake ice cream to sushi and the store’s signature hand-breaded chicken tenders.

“We aim to please,” said Kim Reynolds, Publix’s community relations manager, who drove in from Charlotte, North Carolina, to help open the new store.

As invited guests, tote bags in hand, exited the store following the well-executed Tuesday-morning tours, Reynolds was beaming.

“Today was wonderful and so exciting,” she said. “Our associates have been working so hard to get the store open, and they are so excited to begin serving customers. This has been a long time coming for both them and the community. They’ve been training and stocking the store. Today was just a fun way for them to practice and get ready for grand-opening.”

The store has been under construction for months. Publix joins the town’s four other major grocery outlets: Bi-Lo, Food Lion, The Fresh Market and Lowes Foods, which opened last year not far from the new Publix.

“There are a lot of options in Pawleys Island,” Reynolds acknoledged, “but we hang our hat on being the premier store for customer service and the products we offer and the knowledge of our associates. We are so pleased to be opening in Pawleys.”

Local residents seemed to be happy, too.

Mike Diem, who lives near the new store, said, “This is just fantastic. I’m retired, so I’m always looking for good specials. I like that we have a lot of options for grocery shopping. There’s a niche for everyone.”

John and Betty Brannan said they enjoyed their preliminary peek at Publix. A cousin worked for the grocery chain before he retired, and the Pawleys Island couple said they often asked him, “When is Publix going to open a store in Pawleys?”

“And now,” Betty Brannan said, “it’s happened, and we couldn’t be more happy. This store will knock everyone’s socks off. This is absloutely where we will do our shopping.”

In welcoming guests, Reynolds noted that Publix is the largest employee-owned supermarket chain in the nation.

“That’s something we are very proud of,” she said. “There’s more to us than the number of stores and sales. It’s really about our people.”

Publix has stores in Florida, Georgia, Alabama, Tennessee, North Carolina and South Carolina.

Publix is privately owned and operated by its 174,000 employees and, in 2014, had sales of $30.6 billion.

“We have really grown in the last 85 years,” Reynolds said.

“We are excited to begin serving customers in Pawleys Island and providing premier service, quality products and value – including a large selection of buy-one, get-one free deals weekly,” Reynolds said. “Additionally, we are looking forward to being an active and present partner in the community.”

Alfred Greer will serve as store manager and has 17 years of service with Publix. He most recently served as a Publix store manager at the Palmetto Pavilion in North Charleston.

A press release provided the following details about the store:
